The most popular names in Ireland?
I think the CSO only began to gather this data in 1998. Here are 2 recent results:
2007
Sean, Jack, Conor, Adam, James, Daniel, Luke, Cian, Michael, Jamie, Aaron, Dylan
Sarah, Emma, Katie, Aoife, Sophie, Ava, Grace, Ella, Leah, Ciara, Amy, Emily
1999
Conor, Sean, Jack, James, Adam
Chloe, Aoife, Sarah, Ciara, Niamh
I haven't been able to find any decent stats on earlier years. Non-saint names only really began to become popular from the 1960s onwards.
My aunts and uncles may provide a good indication of names popular in the 1940s/50s (these names are commonly given a pet form):
James (Jimmy). John, Patrick (Paddy), Daniel, Timothy (Timmy or Tadhg), Donal, Thomas (Tommy), Michael (Mick), Seamus.
Mary, Margaret (Maggie or Peggy), Sheila, Bridget, Ellen, Elizabeth (Liz or Betty), Rita, Eileen, Catherine (Kitty).
Grandparents (1910-20 etc)
Joseph, James, Paddy, Daniel (Danny)
Mary, Bridget (Biddy), Julia, Molly, Peggy
