I've noticed recently that several of my top names (for boys and girls) also appear as favorites on quite a few of my contacts' lists. I've also that certain names are much more popular at the school where I teach than is reflected in national rankings. Of course, name popularity varies dramatically based on geographic region, socioeconomic status, religion, ethnic background, education level, and social circle.
My question for you: Without paying attention to national rankings, what names seem the most popular to you...
-- in the Yahoo! Answers community?
-- among your Y!A contacts (or contacts through any other message boards)?
-- among actual children you know?
-- among children in your religious or cultural community (if you belong to one)?
-- among your real-life friends (if you discuss names with them)?
What names seem most popular among your social set?
Well. Yeah. That's because your names are lovely. If I recall you're also a fan of the name Catherine (with a C no less) which is high on my list of favourites.
In the Yahoo community I've seen a lot of Isabellas for first names and a lot of Rain and Skye for middle names. Lily or similar (Lilian, Lyla) also seem pretty popular. I also see a lot of Madisons, but I'm not sure whether that's because there genuinely are a lot or whether I just remember them the most because I dislike the name so much.
For boy's I've actually noticed a lot of people saying Ryder and Hunter. The Ayden names seem pretty popular still. And there seems to be a bit of a theme with the 'x'. Jaxon, Max, Xavier, Axel, Rex, Maddox, Paxton, Braxton. I've just noticed a lot of 'x's recently.
I come from a black-hole community in Canada - it's kinda backwoods if you ask me. I've always rather hated it. Growing up the most popular name was Jordan for boys (There were at least 4 in every grade). There was no definitively popular girls' name - even national favourites like Ashley, Jennifer and Jessica weren't that popular. Now the big names I notice are Logan and Tristan for boys and Neveah and Ava for girls.
My friends' have pretty varied taste in real life. One friend loves the name Brena (Bray-nah) for a girl. Another likes Lucifer for a boy (because of the meaning - "Bringer of Light") but ... has been convinced that connotations to the devil probably aren't going serve him well in life. Practically she says she'd use Luca. One of my guy friends likes Kian for a boy (Key-in). And the last friend whose baby name preferences I know sadly likes Andrew for a girl - which kills my soul a little bit as it's one of my favourite boy names. But frankly, I'm not at the age where lots of my friends are having children yet.
I get what you're saying about names being sort of determined by different factors. I noticed the disparity between names of the middle-upper class and the lower-income classes when I switched to a private highschool. Public school there were lots of girls with names like Tiffany, Crystal, Sierra, Diamond, Chanel, etc. Really trendy names. Going into boarding schools there wasn't a single one - most of the names of my fellow students were really classic and somewhat old fashioned. A lot of biblical names - David was particularly popular.
Reply:1. seems like I see Rosalie, Esme, Bella, Edward, and Jasper a lot on here. Also, the expected popular names: Madison, Aidan...
2. Isla seems to be on most of my contacts' lists.
3. Well, I don't know tons of kids, but I know two Isaiah's and two Lydia's.
4. religious: Isaiah, Elijah, Lydia, Anna
5. Not too many of my friends have similar tastes, really. Ruby is one that many like...as well as Benjamin for a boy.

-Katherine/Catherine seems to be pretty popular. Dominic seems to be a boy's name gaining popularity.
-Most of them like Amy, Holly, blah blah blah. For boys they like Danny.
-Abigail, Rebecca, classic biblical/Hebrew names like that and names like Madeline, Molly etc. Grace is a pretty popular one. (These are names from my church) For boys, there seems to be alot of Jacobs and Aidans.
-Addison, Avery, Aubrey, Lorelai and Sarah for girls. Adam, Michael and Nicholas for boys.

Reply:1.) In the Yahoo! Answers community, I have to say that I see the following boys' names very often: Jacob, Aidan/Braydon/Caden/Jaden, and Landon. Neither of them are really my style, and I am really growing sick of the Aidan names. The girls names that I see most often are the flower names (Lily, Rose, Violet), the virtue names (Faith, Hope, Grace), and what I call the Victorian names (Isabella, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Madelyn/Addelyn, Madison/Addison). Of all of the aforementioned girls' names, the only two I would use are Elizabeth or Charlotte.
2.) My Y!A contacts seem to like classic or Victorian names. Matilda, Grace, and Charlotte for girls. I am still amazed with the range in names for boys. Most people seem to agree with James and William.
3.) From 2005 - 2008, I taught ballet and jazz at a local dance studio in Boise, Idaho where I was attending college. The girls that I taught ranged in age from 5 to 14. The most popular names among the younger girls (ages 5-8) were: Madison/Madelyn, Hannah, Paige, Lauren, and Rachel. Of these five names, I had multiples in each class (i.e. one class had more than one Lauren). The most popular names among the pre-teens (ages 11-14) were: Sarah, Megan, and Ashley.
4.) I am not a religious person, but I went to college in Boise, Idaho which, second only to Utah, has a very heavy Mormon/LDS influence. The majority of the children in Utah and Idaho tend to have names that reflect the Mormon religion. Logan, a popular boy and girls name, is a city in Utah. Joseph and Brigham are also very common middle names for boys, after Brigham Young and Joseph Smith. Girls tend to have middle names like Grace, Faith, and Hope, which could either reflect their popularity in the U.S., or the religious virtues of the LDS church.
5.) Five of my friends have had children in the last year.
- Brittany just had Parker, her baby boy, in addition to her toddler boy Jaden.
- Christine just had her baby Jacob, in addition to her 12 year old daughter Samantha.
- Erica just had her first born boy Finley. (She is very Irish and proud of it.) She and I have discussed her liking the names Sawyer and Keegan for boys, as well as Laken for a girl.
- Alyson named her baby girl Kenlie Eileen. (Eileen was her mother's name.)
- Betsy just had Adrian James one month ago.
My best friend Megan and I talk about what names we like occasionally. She loves the name Grace for a girl and Camden for a boy. My boyfriend and I talk often about what names we like. It's important for him that his late mother's name (Adriana Jeanie) be somewhere in his children's names, and it's important to me that my late father (James) be incorporated as well. We both like the idea of using Jeanie and James as middle names.
Good question!
Reply:I socialize mostly with people from work. It’s a large company in Central California with a weekly newsletter that includes birth announcements of employees’ children and grandchildren. There are a lot of people of Portuguese, Hispanic and Assyrian ancestry, many of whom are bilingual.
BOYS
Biblical names that I know more than one boy under 5: Andrew, Caleb, Isaac, Joseph, Lucas, Matthew
Not Biblical: Jackson and Trey
2 syllable, ends in –n (only one of each in most cases, but fits the trend)
Brendan Caden Colin Daiden Dalton Dillon Evan Hilton Houston Jackson Kingston Logan Ryan Tristan
One-syllable names
Jack Max Nels North Pierce Trey
GIRLS
Know more than one girl under 5:
Avery and Isabella
Clara / Claire
Neveah / Heaven
Lily / Lillie / Lillian
The two expectant moms that come to mind right now are naming their girls Evie and Camila (just one “l”).
Baby girls born in the last year include Aimee, Anelise and Addison; Brielle and Brooklyn; Valerie and Vivian; Emilee and Elise; Destiny, Jayda and Claire; baby boys include Max and Micah; Giovanni and Jackson; Trey, Carter, Logan, Isaac and Dasian (yes, with an “s”).
A pretty sibset, all girls under 5: Sonya, Ava, and Emma
Reply:In the Yahoo! Answers Community I see these names VERY often:
Landon
Sophia
Abigail
Aliyah
Hannah........For some
Leah............reason
Alexis..........everyone seems to love Jon and Kate's
Collin.............children's names on this site.
Aaden...............I am no exception, having fell in love with the names
Joel....................Collin and Joel after watching the show
and Aurora. That name is always popping up while I am browsing.
I have no Y!A contacts except for family and friends, so I will skip this one.
Among actual children I know: (I assume you mean the children's names, not names they like because that list would be drastically different including everything from Barbie to Octopus. Little kids name their dolls the strangest things....)
Katherine
Anthony
Lauren
Ryan
Megan
Theo....I actually know quite a few of these.
Zoe
and Elizabeth.
No real religious community in my life so I am going to have to skip this one as well.
Among my real-life freinds:
My friends have a wide range of preferences but we all seem to agree on a few.
Daphne
Rose
Annie
Grace
and Katherine
Our tastes in boys names are too different to mention many common ones but we all like Nathan.
Reply:Y!A community - I'd have to say Aiden and Addison and such. Those names are becoming so popular, unfortunately. I love the correct spelling of Aidan, and Addison for a boy.
But, I haven't seen many people on here who just love Emily or Jacob, and those are the two most popular names... Interesting, right?
Y!A contacts - well, most of my contacts, like myself, don't like "unisex" names. But one favorite that I share with a contact is Remy for a girl, which is nice. But I'd probably have to say more traditional names, although I can't think of any specific examples right now.
Children I know - Strangely, I know a few Scotts that are little boys... I recently moved into a new neighborhood, and there are 3 Scotts! Also, Megan and Lilly and Grace seem to be very popular among the girls in my new neighborhood. I also know like 5 Jacobs under the age of 12, 4 of which live in my neighborhood. That's actually not very surprising considering it's at number 1.
I don't belong to a religious of cultural community. But, I do know 4 Jacob's who are Jewish. (One being my brother, but we aren't like hardcore Jews. Lol)
Real-life friends: Well, I don't necessarily discuss names with all of friends, only my best friend, but I know an insane amount of Tylers.
In my state testing room a few weeks ago, which goes alphabetically for our school, there were 4 Tylers; and that was only from all of the last names starting with A, and about 5 people whose last names start with B.
But in all, I think I know 10 Tylers... And that's just in my grade. And for the years that we were all born, Tyler was ranked number 5. And, I only know about 5 Michaels in all, and that was ranked number 1 for a long time.
But anyway, I do discuss names with my best friends, and while we both like most of the same names, we both love different names. Which is good, because I like discussing "unisex" names with her. Ha ha
